Blackthorn or Sloe (Prunus spinosa)

Native to the British Isles, this thorny shrub gives shelter to many birds but perhaps it is better known for the fruit, sloes.  The wood has a light yellow sapwood and brown heartwood.  It is hard and tough, and takes a good polish, and is the traditional wood for the Irish shillelagh.
