Barberry (Berberis vulgaris). This was a common sight in hedgerows until it was discovered that it is a host for ‘rust’, which devastated crops on the 19C. The wood is a very distinctive yellow with a black swirl. It was used by early furniture makers for fine inlay work. Barberry jams and jellies were given to those with liver and stomach disorders. This plant was sorced from a garden in Bridport and as it had died it has become infected by a fungas that has coursed this spalting. All timber is treated abd stabilised Before being turned into pens.
