Black Poplar Burr (Populus nigra)
Probably native to Britain, poplar wood is used to make baskets and matchsticks; in Holland it is used to make clogs. This form is taken from the burrs, a growth seen on the outside of the tree where branches have not formed properly. As a result, the grain forms in swirls and curls. All wood has been stabilised before being turned.
