Quilted Maple (Acer saccharum) The North American sugar maple gives us glorious autumn colours and maple syrup, as well as this usually uniformly pale timber with its definite attractive lustre. This stunning figuring is caused by compression of the timber , normally caused by stresses to the timber (high winds etc). The figuring is sometimes apparent before the tree is sawn by a rippled affect seen on the bark of the tree.
