Yew (Taxus baccata)
Yew is considered the wood of everlasting life and continual rebirth with some trees being recorded as over 1000 years old. The orange-brown wood has an attractive grain and takes a high polish. Yew root has very interesting and unusual grain and it is always a pleasure to turn this very fine figuring into a pen that will be treasured for years to come. The closed pen really shows the wood to good effect without the normal inclusion of an end cap.
This Yew came from a tree taken down outside Crewkerne in Somerset, the tree was unsafe to the general public and I took several pieces of the root before it was removed.
