Gorse is known by many names ~ Furze, Gorst, Whin, Frey and Prickly Broom. It is a common plant of heath-lands and likes full sun and sandy soil. Its wonderfully fragrant golden flowers are associated with the spring equinox where it flowers most strongly but it bears flowers almost all year round, hence the saying 'when Gorse is out of bloom, kissing's out of season'. Gorse is associated with love, protection and romance and is used to further the romance of a consensual relationship and to protect against negative and dark magic.
