Lilac (Syringa vulgaris)
Best known for its scented spring flowers, this shrub is native to southeast Europe and was introduced to Britain in 1621. The wood is hard with purple heartwood, and in Victorian times it was used for inlay work. This wood has been cut across the grain to show both sapwood and heartwood together.
