Brown Oak (Quercus robur)
The Druids held the oak tree sacred and it is still the ‘king’ of British trees. It yields a very strong timber with an attractive silvery grain. A beefsteak fungus on the trunk will not kill the tree but only takes enough nutrients for its own survival. The fungus causes brown stains, and the resulting timber is much sought after for specialist veneers.
