Holm Oak (Quercus ilex)
Most oaks loose their leaves in winter, but holm oak is evergreen. Its leaves are spiky when young, giving the tree its English name ‘holm’ and Latin name ‘ilex’ as both mean ‘holly’. Holm oak is native to the Mediterranean and was brought to Britain more than 400 years ago.
