Barberry (Berberis vulgaris).
This was a common sight in hedgerows until it was discovered that it is a host for ‘rust’, which devastated crops on the 19C. The wood is a very distinctive yellow , the sap wood is a brighter yellow whereas the heart is usually a subtler shade of yellow. It was used by early furniture makers for fine inlay work. Barberry jams and jellies were given to those with liver and stomach disorders.
This set is sold but if you some writing implements made from this unique British timber, please get in touch.
